Visiting Italy has always been on my bucket list, and this year, we had the amazing opportunity to do so to witness our friend say "I Do" to the love of her life.
While in Italy, we couldn't miss the chance to visit Venice, a city known for its winding canals, historic architecture, and rich cultural heritage.
Though there is an abundance of things to see and do, two days is the perfect amount of time to explore Venice if you're en route to or from another country. With careful planning, you can conquer this beautiful city and create unforgettable memories. Here's a comprehensive itinerary to help you make the most of your 48 hours in Venice.
Day Zero: Arrival and Getting to the Heart of Venice
It is important to note that there are two main airports in close proximity to Venice - the Marco Polo Airport (VCE) which is about 13 km (8 miles) north of Venice and the Treviso Airport (TSF) which is about 40 km (25 miles) north of Venice.
While both airports offer various transportation options to reach Venice, including buses, taxis, and shuttle services, Marco Polo Airport (VCE) is the main international airport and is the most convenient option for travelers. Treviso Airport primarily handles low-cost carriers and charter flights.
The unique thing about getting to the city of Venice is that there are no "normal" roads. There is one long bridge which connects the mainland to Venice city with only one road and a railway but every other transportation around the city of Venice runs via the famous canals - of which there are about 177. Therefore, if you need to get to the heart of Venice from Marco Polo Airport (VCE), here are your options:
Option 1: Water Taxi
Service: Private Water Taxi
Cost: Approximately €100-€120
Time: 20-30 minutes
For a direct and scenic route to your accomodation, consider taking a private water taxi. Also consider taking this option if you're travelling with alot of luggage or with little ones as this is the most convenient option while offering a picturesque introduction to Venice.
Option 2: Public Waterbus also known as the "Vaporetto"
Cost: €15 per person
Time: 60-90 minutes
The Alilaguna water bus service provides a more affordable alternative to a private water taxi. The Blue, Orange, and Red lines connect the airport to various stops in Venice.
NB: Take note of the timetable and ensure you plan accordingly. While we took the waterbus upon arrival, we needed to book a private water taxi upon departure as we needed to arrive at Marco Polo Airport (VCE) at 4am for an early departure flight back to London.
Option 3: Bus and Vaporetto
Service: ATVO Express Bus to Piazzale Roma, then Vaporetto
Cost: €8 for the bus, €7.50 for the vaporetto
Time: 60-75 minutes
Take the ATVO express bus from the airport to Piazzale Roma. From there, you can catch a vaporetto to your accommodation. This option is budget-friendly and provides a more local travel experience.
