Venice with Young Children: Tips for a Smooth Trip

Venice, with its charming canals, historic architecture, and vibrant culture, is a dream destination for many. However, traveling with young children can present unique challenges. With careful planning and a few helpful tips, your family can enjoy a smooth and memorable trip to this magical city.

Choose the Right Accommodation

Staying within Venice itself is crucial when traveling with young children. Opting for accommodation in the heart of the city allows for easier travel. Remember, Venice is built on water and staying on the outskirts of Venice would means daily commutes back and forth. Accomodation in Venice also makes it easy to return to your room or apartment for naps or breaks.

Travel Light and Smart

Venice is renowned for its many bridges and tight alleyways, which can be tricky to navigate with a standard stroller. A compact, lightweight stroller or a baby carrier will be much more convenient for getting around. The narrow streets and numerous steps mean you'll appreciate the ease of a smaller, more maneuverable stroller, or the hands-free convenience of a carrier.

MAMAZING Lightweight Baby Stroller

For our trip to Venice, we opted to purchase the Mamazing Lightweight Baby Stroller due to its compact and lightweight design. From the moment we arrived, the Mamazing stroller proved to be an excellent choice. Its compact size allowed us to easily navigate Venice's narrow alleys and crowded streets. The lightweight design made it a breeze to carry over the numerous bridges, which can be a significant challenge with a bulkier stroller. One of the standout features of the Mamazing stroller was its durability. Despite its light frame, it handled the uneven cobblestones and rugged terrain of Venice with ease.

Plan Your Itinerary

When planning your itinerary, consider activities that will engage and entertain your children while allowing you to soak in the city's beauty. Here are a few family-friendly options:

1. Exploring Piazza San Marco: Let your children marvel at the grandeur of St. Mark's Basilica and the Campanile. The open space of the square allows for some running around while you take in the sights.

2. Riding a Vaporetto or Gondalas: The public water buses (vaporetti) are a great way to travel around Venice with children. The gondalas are a more expensive way to experience Venice, but they’ll love the boat rides has it provides a unique perspective of the city.

3. Enjoying the Parks: While Venice doesn’t have many parks, the Giardini Pubblici in Castello offers a green space for children to play and run around.

Dining with Children

Italian cuisine is generally very child-friendly, with plenty of pizza, pasta, and gelato to please even the pickiest eaters. Many restaurants have high chairs and can prepare simpler dishes upon request.

Venice With Young Children

Take Breaks and Stay Hydrated

Venice can be overwhelming, especially for little ones. Take regular breaks to rest and hydrate, particularly if you’re visiting during the warmer months. Carry a refillable water bottle and take advantage of the city’s numerous water fountains.

Engage with Local Culture

Engage your children with the local culture by explaining the history and significance of the sights you’re visiting. Stories about Venetian gondoliers, the Doge’s Palace, or the legend of Marco Polo can make the experience more enriching and memorable for them.

Prepare for the Weather

Venice can be hot and humid in the summer and chilly and damp in the winter. Pack appropriate clothing, including sun hats and sunscreen for the warmer months, and warm layers and rain gear for the cooler seasons.
