When Steven and I first got engaged, one of the most common questions was:

DID YOU KNOW?

WERE YOU SURPRISED?

I mean, we certainly had conversations about marriage and our plans as we both knew pretty early in our relationship that we’d someday get married. But, a few weeks before Steven popped the question, we went to look at rings together so I did know that it was on his mind.

Here’s why we decided to go ring shopping together:

    • To get an idea of what we were looking for. Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure a lot of females spend way too much time ‘Pinteresting’ the ultimate engagement ring or wedding ring but does that suit you? Do you have the funds to get that ring? Does your partner know what you’re looking for? It definitely takes the pressure off when your partner has some idea as well as some options to choose from. Don’t forget, you can’t read each other’s mind.
    • You’ll also get an idea of the costs. Steven and I both thought that a lovely engagement ring, as well as the wedding bands, would amount to thousands of dollars. This is indeed false, yes there are some pricey rings and there are also some inexpensive rings. But underneath it all, it shouldn’t be the cost of the ring but what the ring symbolises.
    • I’m not a fan of surprises (and in this case, neither was Steven). This is something that we both were quite picky about as it’s something that we’d wear for the rest of our lives.
    • We also realised that pictures can be deceiving. When searching for rings, everything looks amazing until you actually try them on and realize that rings are just like clothes – not every outfit suits every figure.

So to be honest, Steven popping the question wasn’t a shock to me. We had discussed our views on marriage, our timelines for such and so much more. Therefore, I knew we were both ready for that step in our relationship. What I didn’t know is that he’d include my family, and be extra extravagant with the proposal. But, there is no right or wrong way to go about picking your rings. In the end, I was happy because it was a decision that we made together!
